thick-textured voicing for a beautiful lady. MR. RIGLEY AND MR. RODNEY, both Carl and John make an interesting choice of notes and huge tones. PRESTO PASTA, Carl states the melody with deep feeling that is flavored with a touch of blues. THREE STEP BOSSA, is solid; he plays powerfully, and his lines are rich, with good continuity. ANGELA, has a flavor of impressionism with a touch of bossa nova and a feeling of reflection. DITMARS BLVD. Carl comes in to play, and he does so, digging in, in his mettlesome manner, his effervescence seeming to effect John like champagne. IS THAT SO, in which Carl dissects the melody, tears it apart, and builds a snarling, kicking, climbing solo that holds the listener gripped in it's throes.
To further understanding where Carl is coming from in this release you must understand the instrument. The Vibraphone is a tuned percussion instrument consisting of a set of metal bars arranged like a piano keyboard. In contrast with the two ranks of a xylophone, all the bars are mounted on one level, facilitating the use of three or four mallets and the playing of cords.
